Southern India Motorcycle Tour - Beaches, Mountains and Jungle Tour

We have been running this Southern India tour since 2009 and it is always a fantastic experience - brilliant roads, stunning scenery, great hotels, superb back-up.  This Indian motorcycle tour has a bit of everything.

Imagine spending 12 days in beautiful Kerala and Tamil Nadu, riding a Royal Enfield Bullet or Himalaya.  Traveling through National Parks, negotiating high mountain passes in the Western and Southern Ghats, staying in beautiful colonial hill stations.  You will see parts of India that few tourists get the chance to see.  There are plenty of opportunities to stop and explore this beautiful country and you will not be herded and hurried along the route.

You will be supported by our own dedicated team of mechanics and back-up van to carry luggage and spare bikes.  If you don’t want to ride a Royal Enfield then we can provide you with a lighter modern 180cc Honda or equivalent.

    Below is the basic Itinerary:

Day 1- UK to Kochi (Flight to Kochi)

The start of this epic holiday begins with a long haul flight to Kochi.  Kerala, known as the 'God's Own Country' is one of the most beautiful places in the world with its beautiful beaches, extensive backwaters and sunshine.  It is a true paradise.

Day 3 -  Acclimatisation day in Kochi

Being in Southern India is like being on a different planet.  The smells, the sights, the sounds, the noise - there is nothing like it in Europe.  On your first day, you will get the time to acclimatise to the magic of India.  Spend part of the day next to the pool; the remainder of the day getting used to your Royal Enfield, experiencing Indian traffic and a trip out to visit Fort Kochi. The journey there is straightforward  and is the ideal way to get used to your Enfield and the Indian traffic.  As an aside Fort Kochi was the setting for the tv documentary "The Real Marigold Hotel".

Day 4 -  Kochi to Allepey

Today we will leave Kochi and head into the backwaters on little used local roads.  This relaxing day is the ideal introduction to riding in India, the route will take us through small waterside villages, paddy fields and the lovely Kumarakom bird sanctuary set on Vembanad lake.  We will overnight in a beautiful 4 star hotel on the banks of the backwaters.

Day 5 -  Allepey to Thekkady

Having experienced the calm and serenity of the backwaters, we will now head into the mountains and into the famous Periyar National Park.  The route consists of a combination of picturesque mountain roads and plantation roads - we will pass through tea, coffee, cardamon, rubber plantations befor entering into the National Park.  This wildlife sanctuary is home to tigers and a significant elephant population, as well as rare lion-tailed macaques, sambar deer, leopards and Indian bison.

    Fantastic Roads

Day 6 -  Thekkady to Munnar

A great days ride as we ride higher into the mountains and enter the Tea plantation region of Munnar.  The roads are great.  Well surfaced, twisty.  The scenery is absolutely stunning - a day you will remember for ever.  Munnar, which is a former Hill Station, is located at 5,200ft and is known as the "Kashmir of Southern India".

Day 7 -  Munnar (ride out day)

We spend two nights in Munnar.  It is so beautiful.  We do take you out on the bikes so you can explore this beautiful region.  We will take you through the Tea Plantations and into Eravikulum National Park and Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary.  We quite often see wild elephants on this ride out.

Day 8 -  Munnar to Kodaikanal

Another beautiful days riding climbing to the hill station of Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu.  We will be going into the heart of the Southern Ghats - a mountain range which rises to a height of approximately 2500m and is India’s second highest mountain chain after the Himalayas.  The town of Kodia sits on a plateau at 6,998ft and apparently the name means "Gift of the Forest".  The drive to Kodai from Munnar is breathtaking.  We will pass the 1000ft high Rats Tail Falls and ascend well surfaced twisty mountain roads.  All in all a delightful day in the saddle.

Day 9 - Kodaikanal to Ooty

A fantastic day riding awaits. The journey from Kodai to Ooty is magnificent - a day that you will never forget.  You will travel on the narrow twisty roads through steamy jungle, through beautiful forests and picturesque waterfalls.

We will cross into the Nilgiri Hills, literally translated, means the Blue Mountains; the area is lush with vegetation and teeming with wildlife and is the source of a thousand streams and rivers.  One of the most spectacular mountain ranges in South India.  It is a land of peaks and precipices, rolling grasslands in the foothills and dense jungles.

Ooty (7,350ft above sea level) is known as the ‘Queen of Hill Stations’ and the buildings wouldn’t have looked out of place in Surrey.

Day 10 - Ooty to Masinagudi

A relatively short day but a great riding day.  The day starts with the  opportunity of negotiating the 36 hairpins bends as we descend from Ooty.  These hairpins are steep and great fun - completely different than riding in the Alps or Pyrenees.  Strangely, the Enfield Bullet adds to the fun and handle pretty well - it is quite common for riders to scrape the pegs on the sharp steep turns!!

We will be heading into the Mudmalai wildlife sanctuary which boasts one of the largest populations of elephants in India.  There is a really good chance that you will see a wild elephant whilst riding through the park. There are also a small number of Tigers and Leopards in the park but these are very elusive and you would be extremely lucky to catch a glimpse of these secretive creatures.

Our hotel for the night is a Jungle Retreat consisting of small cottages located in a jungle clearing.  There are plenty of monkeys around you quite often see wild boar drinking at the stream.  In the evening we will take you out on jeeps through the middle of the wildlife park before heading back for a BBQ and a sociable evening around the campfire.

Day 11 - Masinagudi to Kozhikode (Calicut)

We will now head out of the mountains and back towards the coast.  A great ride awaits as we wind our way out of the Mudmalai Wildlife Sanctuary and towards the bustling town of Kozhikode. On the way back we will visit the beautiful Kappad beach, this is the historic beach where Vasco-da-Gama landed on the 27th of May 1498, with 170 men in three vessels.

Day 12 - Kozhikode (Calicut) to Kochi (Cochin)

Our last day on the bikes as we head back to Kochi. A straightforward ride back to Kochi.  The Indian traffic makes this an exhilirating ride as we travel through numerous small towns on the way back to complete the circle and tour.

Day 13 - Kochi to Home (Flight departs).

Time to go home - hopefully, you will have had a life changing experience.  Of course, if you want to stay on and see more of India, that can be arranged.  We are more than happy to help you sort out hotels, travel arrangements etc.  You have come so far so why not make the most of it!
